This nature documentary is a 90-minute mini-version of the grand longer Planet Earth produced by the BBC. The latter production took five years to perform, had a $25 million budget, and employed the latest in photographic technology. The trim plain motion and time lapse techniques are especially impressive. Watching the twelve-month transformation of a forest in 30 seconds is spectacular. Earth focuses on three animal “families”–a polar hold and two cubs, a herd of elephants, and then a mother and baby humpback whale that get a 4,000 mile migration. In between these three stories the film intersperses takes from the longer documentary. My only complaint is that this production oversells the product with music that at times is both melodramatic and cutesy, and a corny narration that is clearly intended for young children (”Time for mom and dad to fix breakfast for junior!”) . If there is any nature photography that does not need hype, this stout shroud version is it. Composed, like its longer predecessor, Earth makes for astounding family viewing.
If you’ve seen Planet Earth already, there is no reason at all to ogle this. All this movie is is bits and pieces of Planet Earth. It unprejudiced makes no sense.

There really is no situation, yet you don’t care. There’s no right subtext to the entire thing, but that doesn’t matter. The actors are all kids and they play baseball…and it’s SO SIMPLE.
One of those puny films that walked quietly into theaters in 1993 and left objective as quietly with cramped fanfare(which is probably why Fox was hesitant on releasing a DVD) not ONLY happens to be one of the greatest SLEEPERS of all-time, it’s also one of the greatest SPORTS films of all-time, ranking with “Field of Dreams”, “Bull Durham”, “Major League”, “The Natural”, and “The Longest Yard”, to name a few.
This movie is grand, so sweetly and innocently Noble, that you don’t care if the corrupt happens or that a main plot-point happens to be the kids retrieving a prize/signed baseball(by Babe Ruth of all players) from the jaws of a dog-beast-monster-thing.

No, if there was something that James Earl Jones was moral about in FIELD OF DREAMS(and he’s in here too as a modern-day Boo Radley), it was that baseball brings us support to the times when we were young and apathetic to the world around us. The same applies here.
This film will manufacture you forget about your problems and redirect your focus on your youth and the times you had fun with your best friends.
No matter if those times were spent on a surburban street where the noxious poles were really parallel phone poles on either sides of the street or you sat on the porch watching us while drinking lemonade and listening to Ray Charles, those are the valid times we remember…

The DVD has a glowing 2:35.1 widescreen transfer(it was originally shot in 70mm Panavision) but is lacking in extras. Peaceful, a obliging cheap DVD with a enormous film…that’s all we ask for sometimes.

Back in 1993, two movies inspiring baseball and children, The Sandlot and Rookie of the Year, came out in the theaters about the same time, both being released by Twentieth Century Fox. I remember Rookie of the Year was pushed hard by the studio while The Sandlot got distinguished less advertising and publicity, which was too terrible because I always notion The Sandlot was a distinguished better film.

Scotty Smalls, his mother (Karen Allen), and his step dad (Dennis Leary) honest moved into the neighborhood and Scotty is having problems acclimating himself to his social surroundings. An smart boy (an egghead), he lacks determined abilities most boys have, like quick-witted how to win and throw a ball, any basic baseball rules, or who’s the Gigantic Bambino. The movie does an favorable job in providing honest enough depth into these characters to provide a sense of the family dynamic given that Allen and Leary have cramped conceal time. In attempting to join a neighborhood prefer up game, Scotty’s lack of rudimentary baseball skills is made painfully apparent, to which all the boys except Bennie, the best player of the bunch, let their derisive comments sail. Bennie, feeling a bit sorry for the modern kid, gives Scotty a couple of tips and a miniature extra relieve in a well hit hover ball that gives Scotty a measure of confidence and helps bring him into the gang. Once Scotty’s approved into the group the movie delves into a status arresting a priceless baseball and a local dog with a mythical reputation. What I really liked was how all the boys came together to support a friend in need, and it was an automatic response. If someone in the circle needs aid, the group rallies around, regardless, as they would have done the same for any other member. While a seemingly natural trait in children (atleast in this movie), it seems to be one that becomes lost as we grow older, as seen in Scotty’s step dad and his reluctance to play procure with Scotty because he has too worthy work and doesn’t have the time. What is so spacious about this movie is while it’s residence in the 50’s, the epic appeals to most anyone. Whether or not we all had that one expansive summer or impartial fond remembrances of childhood friends and activities in general, the movie serves to serve grasp days when things were simple, and summers were made up of endless possibilities. While watching this movie, I conception about friends I had when I was a kid, phrases we dilapidated, nicknames, activities, etc.
No exact extras on this disc, but a gigantic presentation of a fabulous movie. My celebrated allotment eager one of the boys called Squints, a smaller boy with broad, great glasses, and scene with curvaceous, older, female lifeguard at the local pool.

Like Moliere, which was released in theaters around the same time, Becoming Jane isn’t a conventional biopic. Instead, Julian Jarrold (White Teeth) expands on events from Jane Austen’s life that may have shaped her fiction. To his credit, he doesn’t stray too far from the facts. In 1795, 20-year-old Jane (Anne Hathaway with believable British accent) is an aspiring author. Her parents (Julie Walters and James Cromwell) married for love, and money is tight. They hope to see their youngest daughter make a more lucrative match, and there’s a besotted local, Mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox, son of actor James Fox), who would be happy to oblige. Unfortunately, Jane isn’t interested. Then, she meets brash law student Tom (The Last King of Scotland’s James McAvoy), while he’s staying with relatives in rural Hampshire. As in many Austen novels, it isn’t love at first sight–but rather irritation. Just as affection begins to bloom, Tom has to return to London, and Wisley, whose financial prospects are superior, proposes. To complicate matters, Tom’s uncle (Ian Richardson in his final performance) disapproves of the outspoken young lady just as much as Wisley’s aunt (Maggie Smith, lending the proceedings some subtle humor). Had Austen penned the script, Tom and Wisley would be combined into one person, but life doesn’t work that way–and nor does Becoming Jane. Though Jarrold’s effort may not be as swoon-worthy as Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice, it remains tru to the spirit of the author’s work. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Roger Hedden’s charming romantic comedy works where so many like ensemble projects fail–on the strength of its amiable characters. The simple but clever plot, which involves a gambling debt, a bartender collecting overdu IOUs, and a tangled web of lies, sets in motion the trajectories of a dozen or so characters wandering the streets of New York one chilly December night. Against this backdrop they pair off, group up, and slowly wind their way back to the very bar where it all started. Hedden’s sharp ear for dialogu comes out in lilting, low-key conversations (he previously cowrote Sleep with Me and Bodies, Rest & Motion), but his greatest triumph is the casting. Campbell Scott, at his understated best as the warm, winsome center of the film, strolls through a series of Big Apple watering holes with all the quiet confidence and affable friendliness a wounded romantic can muster. Equally fine are sweetly sincere Moira Kelly as his sister, thoughtful debt collector Peter Riegert, goofy barfly Katrin Cartlidge, conniving creep Eric Stoltz, and especially the often misused Daryl Hannah, who sends sparks as Scott’s old girlfriend. Hedden’s leisurely pace gives us time to hang with the characters, who are fine company and never overstay their welcome (the film clocks in under 90 minutes). It’s the kind of movie Hollywood has forgotten how to make, a modestly endearing little piece that eschews big drama for delightful characters and enchanting moments. –Sean Axmaker
